In 1932, when Arkhangelsk Pedagogical Institute was established, the Department of Marxism-Leninism was formed. On February 26, 1971, it was divided into the Department of the CPSU History and Political Economy and the Department of Philosophy and Scientific Communism. On October 10, 1989, the latter was renamed to the Department of Philosophy and Scientific Socialism. On October 10, 1990, the Academic Council of the Arkhangelsk State Pedagogical Institute decided to divide the Department of Philosophy and Scientific Socialism into the Department of Philosophy and the Department of Political Science. In 2011, the Department of Philosophy merged with the Arkhangelsk State Technical University’s Department of Philosophy and became part of the Institute of Social, Humanitarian and Political Sciences of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M. V. Lomonosov. In 2015, the Department of Philosophy was renamed to the Philosophy and Sociology Department.
