Learning outcomes of the course unit: The course gives an introduction to tourism, both as an industry and as an academic discipline. The course will explain tourism as a phenomenon by approaching it via various subjects and their traditions, notions and models. The course will describe tourism as a national as well as an international industry.

A Graduate of course Tourism in the Arctic will have developed a range of skills and aptitudes, including be able to:

  • research and assess paradigms, theories, principles, concepts and factual information, and apply such skills in explaining and solving problems,
  • critically assess and evaluate evidence in the context of research methodologies and data sources,
  • critically interpret data of different kinds and appraise the strengths and weaknesses of approaches adopted,
  • describe, synthesise, interpret, analyse and evaluate information and data relevant to a professional or vocational context,
  • plan, design, execute and communicate a sustained piece of independent intellectual work which provides evidence of critical engagement with, and interpretation of, appropriate data,
  • apply knowledge to the solution of familiar and unfamiliar problems,
  • develop a sustained reasoned argument, perhaps challenging previously held assumptions,

  • demonstrate effective communication and presentation skills,

  • work effectively independently and with others,
  • take and demonstrate responsibility for their own learning and continuing personal and professional development,
  • self-appraise and reflect on practice,
  • plan, design, manage and execute practical activities using appropriate techniques and procedures whilst demonstrating high levels of relevant skills,

A graduate of course Tourism in the Arctic will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and characteristics of tourism as an area of academic and applied study, including being able to:

  • understand and appreciate the potential contributions of disciplines that help to explain the nature and development of tourism,
  • explain and challenge theories and concepts which are used to understand tourism,
  • explain and challenge the definitions, nature and operations of tourism,
  • demonstrate an understanding of the domestic and international nature and dimensions of tourism,

  • utilise a range of source material in investigating tourism,
  • demonstrate an awareness of the dynamic nature of tourism in modern societies,
  • understand the intercultural dimensions of tourism.

A graduate in Tourism in the Arctic will be able to demonstrate understanding of the nature and chаracteristics of tourists, in particular:

  • be able to explain the patterns and characteristics of tourism demand and the influences on such demand,
  • have an understanding of the ways in which tourists behave at destinations,
  • understand the cultural significance of tourism for tourists and societies.

An graduates in Tourism in the Arctic will be able to demonstrate understanding of the relationships between tourism and the communities and environments in which it takes place, in particular:

  • being able to evaluate the contribution and impacts of tourism in social, economic, environmental, political, cultural and other terms,
  • having an understanding of, and being able to evaluate, the approaches to managing the development of tourism through concepts of policy and planning,
  • appreciating the ethical issues associated with the operation and development of tourism,
  • having an understanding of the issues and principles of sustainability and social responsibility in the context of tourism.

Mode of delivery: face - to - face, distance learning

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

  • General admission requirements for higher education,
  • Good skills in English,
  • Want to learn or to work with travel and tourism in the northern region

The program is free of charge, and no tuition fee has to be paid. There will be expenses to buy literature and to computers and internet access to get the lectures.

Course contents:

The term «tourism» refers to the activities and behaviours arising from the movement of people away from their normal home environments for a variety of purposes. The study of tourism draws on a wide range of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks regarding consumption, production and management.

Assessments methods and criteria

The learning and teaching methods used in Tourism in the Arctic include combinations of some of the following: lectures, workshops and seminars, group and individual tutorials, live performance, case-studies, industrial placements, working in small groups, independent study and research, and technology-enhanced and blended (смешанный) learning.

I will use in my course technologies of distance learning MOODLE и I-LINK.

Work requirement number 1.

Description of grading.

The grading scale is A – B – C – D – E – F. A is the highest pass grade, grade E the lowest, and F is fail.

The important in the assignment is:

  • Have you answered the question?
  • Is the work your own, and have you made your independent opinion? (Pro and contra.)
  • Is the extent (length) as required?
  • Have you made use of what we have talked about at the lecture, and have you used literature from the course? What extra sources and literature have been used?
  • Are there references in the text, and a proper literature list?

A: An excellent description. Have answered the question “Give a description of a local tourist attraction.” This means that one attraction is chosen and described. The bullet points above should be met with and something from both the literature given and from the lectures should be used. References in the text should be mentioned in a literature list. The text should be written in your own words with a discussion about why the object chosen is an attraction.

B: A good description, but have not answered all the points mentioned. Poor use of literature from the course. The assignment is as such good and independent.

C: OK description, but missed some of the points described. The question is not met. Most have described a destination with more than one attraction. Independent work.

D: Given a description and meet some of the points mentioned. Not answered the question, no references and literature list. To some degree an independent work.

E: Missed most of the points given. A few positive elements are found in the text. The assignment is not evaluated as independent work.

F: Missed everything. Too short. The description is clip from a book or internet without given any sources, or any description of your own word.
