Objectives of the course:
Students will be able
- to learn how style is influenced by such factors as context, genre, historical perspective and author
- to explain linguistically a range of textual features including literary and non-literary texts
- to adapt to various situational conditions of verbal communication choosing an appropriate mode of verbal interaction
Prerequisites: Theoretical grammar of English, English Lexicology, History of English, Introduction to General Linguistics
Content: Background and scope of modern Stylistics; dimensions of language in use; meaning in language and how it functions in communication; expressive resources of linguistic elements and structures; introduction to the theory of text and discourse; classification of functional styles; stylistic analysis.
