The IV Barents PhD Summer School is a collaborative project between the universities of Umeå, Oulu, Tromsø and Archangelsk aiming at gathering young researchers and experts from the Northern universities for the PhD course “Barents Region – the Territory of Ecology” to address the key issues of the region development and preservation.
Significant natural and energy resources, wide perspectives of economic and industrial development have made the Arctic Region the strategic territory for the leading economic and industrial countries, and consequently one of the most vulnerable one. Therefore, the issues of exploration and preservation of the Northern environment are on the top of the agenda nowadays and demand multilateral cooperation and its addressing by different actors.
The relevance of the Barents PhD School is also determined by the implementation of the Action Plan on Climate Change elaborated in 2013 within the framework of the Barents Euro-Arctic cooperation. The Action Plan presupposes significant contribution from northern academia in meeting the key policy areas: mitigation, adaptation, research and outreach.
The core subject of the School is also in line with the Russian Federation Chairmanship Programme in Barents Euro-Arctic Council for 2015-2017 and the announced Russian national project “2017 - Year of the Environment” with the focus on ecological education, forest regeneration, resource management, environmental pollution prevention and infrastructure development.
