About Summer School

On behalf of Northern Arctic Federal University and Northern State Medical University we are pleased to announce the IV Barents PhD Summer School which will be held in 20-26 August, 2017 in Arkhangelsk.

This year the School will gather young researchers and experts from the Northern universities for the PhD course “Barents Region – the Territory of Ecology”.

One of the most widely discussed and studied issues is the global climate change and its impact on environment condition and wellbeing of the local communities. The melting of sea ice gives access to new transportation routes and oil and gas reserves. The intensive usage of these resources and increased economic activity put environment at risk, and may cause natural and industrial disasters.

The Northern region is especially vulnerable for climate change because many of the traditional livelihoods are connected with the nature. The relevance of the Barents PhD School is also determined by the implementation of the Action Plan on Climate Change elaborated in 2013 within the framework of the Barents Euro-Arctic cooperation. The Action Plan presupposes significant contribution from northern academia in meeting the key policy areas: mitigation, adaptation, research and outreach.

The core subject of the School is also in line with the Russian Federation Chairmanship Programme in Barents Euro-Arctic Council for 2015-2017 and the announced Russian national project “2017 - Year of the Environment” with the focus on ecological education, forest regeneration, resource management, environmental pollution prevention and infrastructure development.
