July 22. Day 15
There is a clock which is “Made in Switzerland” in our cabin. The crew have prepared for the expedition. I noticed this phrase incidentally because of little tossing. Actually, it is a little choppiness: waves are elongated and whitecaps in some areas.
Polyarnitsi (female polar explorers)
Yesterday the most impressive participants of the Artic expedition came up with a plan to stay longer in the Arctic. Maybe there would be a vessel that could bring them home when they would be tired to be polar explorers. The only possibility was to stay with a group of national park “Russian Arctic” on the Cape Zhelanija and to help them reconstruct the base.J
Irina Pokrovskay showed us a film about birdwatchers- the one who likes to observe birds. They travel along the United States for a whole year to found as much as possible birds. It is such a competition. The most amazing fact that birdwatchers believe each other and the fact of fixation, making photos, is not obliged, it is enough just to hear a bird`s sound.
Our neighbor Hoesli Eric can sing very touching and emotional but sad songs.
At lunch remembered abound Erminia Zdanko- she was a doctor in the Georgij Brusilov expedition on “Saint Anna” schooner and the first Russian female polar explorer. She was a daughter of lieutenant general and at the year 14 planned to participate in Port Arthur defense.
In August 1912 she went on the board “Saint Anna” as a passenger on excursion from Saint Petersburg to Aleksandrovsk-na-Murame (Murmansk was founded in 1916).
She became the doctor by accident when it became clear that there was no any doctor on board of “Saint Anna”. Erminia had finished medical nurses courses some time before. She helped a lot during the first wintering. Members of the expedition got trichinosis. Despite the fact that even Erminia had this disease she treated everyone in any case so that no one died during the wintering. Albanov and Kondrad, the only survived members of that lost expedition, gave high praise to Ermilia Zdanko.
The Georgij Brusilov expedition was organized to come along the North-East Passage from Kola peninsula to Vladivostok. They started the expedition in September 1912 and in October the vessel was pushed to Yamal peninsula. It was planned to winter there but was impossible because of the vessel drift to North. In 1913 the vessel went to north of Rudolf Island. During the second wintering there was a lack of kerosene as well as products. In 1914 a part of the crew together with navigator left the vessel in order to find any land. There was 14 of them and only Albanov and Konrad reached the land. They were found by the Sedov expedition (already with Sedov). Albanov had very important and significant documents such as a log book, tables of meteorological researches and sea depth.
What has happened with “Saint Anna” vessel is still unknown. Attempts to find the lost expedition were made from 1914 till present time. That had tragic consequences. For example, a helicopter with Oleg Prodan on board, the director of national park “Onezkoe Pomorye” was crashes during a search attempt to find Brusilov.
It is not easy to follow the doctors recommendations: I write my diary but also use drops and have made type bigger. I feel much better.
The tossing had increased during the day. When Aleksandr Sergunin gave his lecture about foreign policy he also had to hold a screen. The very interesting lecture was about relationships of twin-cities. Initially this term was applied to two concrete cities in Minnesota (USA) and then was used in relation to another settlements that had lots in common due its position. After the Soviet Union division lots of such cities were turned out to be on both sides of the border. Nowadays some of them demonstrate us successful cooperation and mutually beneficial relations, e.g. Narva and Ivangorod. An interesting example is a relation among Finland and Sweden. At the beginning they were even competitors. The first joint project was building of swimming pool in 1960s. It was built in the middle of river. Afterwards IKEA appeared, than joint transport system, school, post office.
Our Great Master (Expert) of weather, Dmitrij Kovalev, said that the weather on the Zelanija Cape would be so-so. It turned up that we had perfect weather for landing: no wind, no waves, no fog, no sun.
Cape Zelanija is not the northernmost point of Novaya Zemlya. It is the border-line of Barents and Kara seas as well as the border between Europe and Asia. Our hydrologists made the last stop in section on Barents sea side, “Molchanov” moved to Kara sea side, water changed its color and everyone started preparing to the landing.
Water in Kara sea and Barents sea has different color. However it is not always possible to find the difference from the Zelanija Cape side.
Jesus quickly searched for the Denis`s card with his photos.
— No reason to visit Stockholm! –played a joke on Denis when Jesus found the hard disk.
Jesus laughed and said — “Come whenever you want!”
