II International Forum «The Arctic: Territory of Dialogue»
On September 22–23, 2011, M.V. Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University named hosted in Arkhangelsk the 2nd International Forum “The Arctic: Territory of Dialogue”. The key topic of the Forum was development of the Arctic transportation infrastructure as a basis for the development of the Arctic region.
The Forum was attended by around 400 leading researchers and experts, politicians, heads of circumpolar countries and regions, representatives of largest businesses from Russia, the USA, Canada and Scandinavia. Top-level officials from different countries visited the Forum: RF Prime-Minister Vladimir Putin, President of Iceland Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, Chairman of the Arctic Council Gustav Lind. Among the participants and the guests of the Forum there also was RF Minister of Emergencies, The RGS President, Sergey Shoigu, Governor of the Perm Territory Oleg Chirkunov, Lieutenant Governor of Alaska Mead Treadwell, Head of the Federal Space Agency Vladimir Popovkin, Special Representative of the Russian President for international cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic, Russian State Duma Deputy Artur Chilingarov.
The Forum participants discussed the development of commercial and research-based marine shipping, transportation hubs and passages, in particular, the Northern Sea Route, polar aviation, cargo and passenger trans-polar and cross-polar traffic. Special attention was paid to the topic of ensuring integrated safety and security in the region, including also the development of multi-lateral mechanisms of emergency prevention and early warning, search and rescue operations.
The discussion focused on the issues of collaborative environmental protection in the Arctic, environmental safety, rational use of natural resources and improvement of the quality of life of indigenous peoples in the Arctic region.
The forum was arranged by the Russian Government, Russian Geographical Society, Russian EMERCOM.
International Scientific Conference “History of Arctic Exploration – from past to future”
Instructed by Marine Board under the RF Government, the Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Northern Directorate for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Rosgidromet and Arkhangelsk Office of the Russian Geographical Society hosted on September 12-13, 2012 in Arkhangelsk the scientific conference with foreign participation: “History of Arctic Exploration: from past to future”. The main goal of the Conference was to reflect on the historical processes related to exploration and development of the Arctic, as well as to outline perspectives and priorities for further developments and research.
The Conference gathered more than 350 participants from different parts of Russia and six Arctic countries. The arrangement was attended by many VIP guests: Honorary Doctor of NArFU, Member in the Russian Federation Council, Special Representative of the Russian President for international cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic Artur Chilingarov; Governor of the Arkhangelsk region Igor Orlov. The speakers at the plenary session were both Russian and foreign experts in sub-arctic territories from the USA, Norway, Germany and the Great Britain. The plenary session was opened by the speech by Anton Vasiljev, Ambassador-at-large on Arctic issues at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, titled: “International cooperation in the Arctic and Russia’s vision”.
The participants of the conference drew up some interim historical results of the development of the Russian Arctic. The conference united both researchers and scientists from research centers and museums. The main outcome of the conference is the new projects and guidelines for further activities of the Arctic community.
