International scientific conference «Communication on the Internet: Multiformat and Multifunctionality»

Northern Arctic Federal University prepares to host the International Online IT-School on 12-16 October 2020 within the framework of the 17th International Youth Festival of Information Technologies “IT-Arkhangelsk”.
This year’s International Tutor School will span August 24-26 and will be held by Northern (Arctic) Federal University for the seventh time. Organized by NArFU Department of International Cooperation, the School traditionally brings together undergraduate and graduate students of all majors.

Northern (Arctic) Federal University took part in the second meeting of the standing Russia-China Cooperation in the Arctic Working Group. Held on an online venue, the meeting involved the government officials of the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China.
Despite the difficulties experienced by offline international communications due to the pandemic of 2020, NArFU project teams have not suspended their plan to apply international programmes as a way to gain resources for their academic and research tasks. Notably, in the first six months alone, the university has figured in 16 project applications filled with the EU programmes (EU-Russia Kolarctic, NEFCO Programme for Environment and Climate Cooperation, Nordic Council of Ministers, Erasmus + Program, among others) with a total NArFU’s budget over 50 million rubles.
NArFU Rector Elena Kudryashova and Acting Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region Alexander Tsybulsky have met with Aleksei Kudrin, Chairman of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation, and Svetlana Merkushina, Director at the Chamber’s Department for Education, Science and Innovation Audit, to discuss the present and future of the federal university.
The first online lecture of the Arctic Floating University (AFU) took place on July 7, 2020. Due to the postponement of the expedition to Franz Joseph Land to the year of 2021, a traditional course of lectures from specialists on Arctic, that used to be delivered on board of the R/V Professor Molchanov during the AFU expeditions, was transferred into the online mode. 15 lectures were held on diverse issues of development and cooperation in the Arctic during the whole month. More than 100 participants from Russia, Belarus, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the USA and Finland attended AFU online lectures.
The Arctic Floating University project has recently completed its first ever online lecture course. Due to the current coronavirus crisis this year’s expedition has been postponed until 2021, and the traditional training course usually delivered onboard expanded and transferred online. The course started in June, lasted for a month and included 15 lectures on Arctic research, exploration and cooperation. The lectures were attended by over 100 participants from Russia, Belarus, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the USA and Finland.
A team of researchers under the leadership of Dmitry Makarov, Professor at NArFU Fundamental and Applied Physics Department, has been awarded a Russian Science Foundation grant following the 2020 contest “Team Research under the Supervision of Young Researchers” in the framework of the Presidential Programme for Research Projects.
NArFU is to launch UNESCO Chair "Technologies for Preservation of the Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Arctic Region Countries”
July 13, 2020 saw the signing of a bilateral agreement for the establishment in NArFU of UNESCO Chair “Technologies for Preservation of the Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Arctic Region Countries”, an event supported by the Russian Federation Commission for UNESCO. The agreement was signed by Director-General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay and NArFU Rector Elena Kudryashova.
Project “Development of think tank functions of the Northern Dimension Institute” brings together nations’ research resources
Launched in 2019, the international research project NDI Think Tank / Development of think tank functions of the Northern Dimension Institute (https://narfu.ru/international/projects/mezdunarodnie_proekti/detail.php?ID=334074) pursues ways of supporting political decision-makers with research-based expertise through Northern Dimension partnerships. The initiative for this project came from NDI coordinating partners, including NArFU which joined the network in 2013.
