NArFU took part in the Olympic torch relay
06.11.2013

Last Friday the Olympic torch relay continued its way through the streets of the capital of Pomorie – Arkhangelsk. The main symbol of the forthcoming XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi was carried through the center of the city by a hundred torchbearers. The students and staff of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov were among them.

The first torchbearer was the legendary bandy player Igor Gapanovich. The torch was carried along the embankment of the Northern Dvina, the Troitsky Avenue and Chumbarov-Luchinsky Avenue.

The rector of NArFU Elena Kudryashova also participated in the relay. This was already the second relay for her, because in October she had taken part in the special expedition to the North Pole, where the Olympic fire had been lit.

Victoria Filippova, the student of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University, gave a comment to journalists after finishing the distance from the Eternal Flame to Karl Marx street. She admitted that the only difficulty for her was the weight of the torch. “For me it was pretty heavy, I’m a delicate girl. So it was not easy to carry the torch that weighs two kilograms, and I had to run fast. Fortunately, the volunteers helped me to carry the torch”, - said Victoria.

The participants of the relay were notable for their bright uniform that they had received as a gift from the Sochi 2014 organizing committee. The volunteers were also noticeable: they were wearing Olympic jackets (with a different style though). A team of volunteers from NArFU participated in the action; they helped organizers in different ways.

Total length of the relay in Arkhangelsk was 20,4 kilometers. Within three hours 100 people overcame two routes around the city center. The Olympic symbol was carried through the most important historical places of Arkhangelsk. Transfer of fire from torch to torch was greeted with applause and cheers. While the Olympic symbol was continuing its way through the capital of Pomorie, a ceremony started in the Sports Palace. The audience admired an amazing celebratory program which included vocal and dance performances, a laser show and a presentation of the Pomorie region.
