Summer Universiade opened in Kazan

Last Saturday the 27th Summer Universiade started in Kazan. The grand opening ceremony was attended by the rector of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University Elena Kudryashova.

Young athletes from 165 countries will compete for 351 sets of medals. The Russian team includes 19 Olympic champions. The first medals were awarded on Sunday.

- I’m sure that athletes from our university will win some medals for the Russian team. I mean the graduate of NArFU’s Institute of Physical Education, Sport and Health Yevgeny Lagunov. Student Sophia Petrenko will take part in the swimming competition on the open water, and student Leonid Ekimov will participate in the sports shooting competition. Our students from the Volunteer Center of NArFU will help to provide comfort during the days of the Universiade together with 20.000 other volunteers, - said Elena Kudryashova.

The Universiade in Kazan has already set the record in the number of sports. There will be totally 27 sports, including several non-Olympic – chess, sambo, wrestling.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Universiade general secretary of the World Federation of University Sports Claude Louis Gallien said that not only the Universiade is very ambitious, but also the torch relay. He concluded his speech with unexpectedly powerful Russian “Hurray!”

The 2013 Summer Universiade will start on July 6th and end on July 17th. The motto of the Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade is “U are the World” which has two meanings: “You are the World” and “Universiade is the World”.
