Board members of the Norwegian Barents Secretariat met with Rector Elena Kudryashova in NArFU this week. Among the guests of our university were governor of Troms Pia Svensgaard, board chairman of the Barents Secretariat Malfrid Bike, chief administrative officer of Troms province Stein Ovesen, chief administrative officer of Nordland province Stig Olsen, general secretary of Barents Secretariat Rune Rafaelsen, adviser of Barents Secretariat Margrethe Alnes and finance director of Barents Secretariat Leif-Astor Bakken.
The meeting started with introductory words from Rector Elena Kudryashova. She explained the role of NarFU which is to conduct scientific research in the Arctic, to train highly qualified specialists and to perform as a driver for development of the whole region. Elena Kudryashova stressed that our university highly appreciates the close and friendly relations that were established with the countries of the Barents Euro-Arctic region, including Norway.
- Cooperation that is developing between Troms province and Arkhangelsk region, between the towns of Tromsø and Arkhangelsk, and, of course, between our twin-universities is an important example of international cooperation. I think that there is no other example of such relations in the world, - said Elena Kudryashova. Rector also expressed hope that international activities carried out by NArFU will contribute to the new Kirkenes Declaration.
Vice-Rector for International Cooperation of NArFU Marina Kalinina spoke about international projects of the University with a focus on Barents cooperation, including student and teacher exchanges, training programs, international conferences and more.
During the discussion the guests asked about the Arctic strategy of NArFU. Elena Kudryashova said that the program of the University will be changed and amended to meet the National Strategy for Arctic Development of the Russian Federation, which was approved by the President of Russia in February. Marina Kalinina added that the federal strategy focuses on international cooperation, science and education, and all of these issues are important for our university. The guests also showed interest to NArFU’s recruiting zctivities.
- Actually now we don’t have any problems with recruitment of students, but most of them are from Arkhangelsk region. We hope, that in the nearest future there will be more students from other regions of the Russian Federation and from other countries, - noted Elena Kudryashova.
