Kolarctic Programme Announced IceOps Project of the Month

Ice Operations has been recognized by the EU-Russia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme KOLARCTIC as the project of the month.

“This is the third project involving NArFU as a partner that has been awarded this status by KOLARCTIC to distinguish the special achievements and results of international project teams. Earlier, this quality mark was awarded to FAMARB: Facility Management of Residential Buildings in Barents Region (February 2020) and DeConcrete: Eco-Efficient Arctic Technologies Cooperation (October 2020). We are very honored to be seen as a highly professional project team,” commented Lyubov Zarubina, Head of NArFU Department of International Cooperation.

Involving the experts in four Barents countries (Russia, Finland, Norway and Sweden), the project uses an integrated approach to analyze the ice situation in the Arctic waters. Its tasks spanning the study of the physical properties of ice and the analysis of satellite imagery and chronological data on the state of the seas, Ice Operations makes use of modern calculation methods and algorithms. “The project will have as its outcomes the introduction of IT in ice situation modeling and the database of up-to-date knowledge on the likely ice loads to be experienced in the northern seas by Arctic development projects as a tool to facilitate risk-related decision-making,” says Sergey Ryabchenko, IceOps thematic coordinator.

More results will be presented by the project experts in their scientific reports as part of Arctic Engineering International School which will be held in NArFU in September.
