On 12-14 November 2019 Vietnam National University of Forestry hosted celebrations marking the 55th Anniversary of its foundation. Northern Arctic Federal University was the sole Russian invitee to the event. NArFU delegation was headed by the Rector, Prof. Elena Kudryashova, and included Prof. Sergey Koptev, Head of the Department of Silviculture and Forest Management, and Ms.Polina Golomidova, Head of International Students Admission Office.
In the framework of the celebrations on 12 November VNUF organized the International Conference "Linkage of Higher Education, Research and International Integration to Sustainable Forest Management and Bio-economy". The Conference was held at high level and gathered, alongside Vietnamese academia and politicians, researchers from Germany, India, Spain, Kazakhstan, Canada, Myanmar, Nigeria, Netherlands, Russia, the USA, the Czech Republic, Philippines, Finland, Japan.
During the opening ceremony NArFU Rector delivered welcoming remarks along with Prof. Dr. Tran Van Chu - VNUF President, HE. Mr. Kari Kahiluoto - Ambassador of Finland to Vietnam; Mr. Vu Xuan Thon - Director of Management Board of Forestry Projects, Prof. Dr. Pham Van Dien - Deputy Director General of Vietnam Administration of Forestry, as well as representatives of Vietnamese government. Prof. Elena Kudryashova also co-chaired the plenary session.
The Conference was divided into 2 sessions discussing Sustainable Forest Management (chaired by Prof. Hoang Van Sam) and Forest-based and Bio-economy Development (chaired by Assoc. Prof. Bui The Doi). Prof. Sergey Koptev from NArFU gave a presentation on forestry management in Russia’s European North.
The Conference participants placed much emphasis on enhancing and disseminating knowledge on methods, policies and technologies for forest management efficiency improvement and sustainable bio-economic development.
On 14 November a ceremony dedicated to the 55th Anniversary of VNUF was held. The event was attended by the top leadership of Vietnam, including representatives of the central bodies of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Vietnamese National Assembly, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Finance, heads of departments and offices of Hanoi and Vietnam’s various provinces and cities, trade union representatives, Vietnam Administration of Forestry and international guests form over 30 universities, research institutes and international organizations.
The ceremony commenced with opening statements by VNUF President, Prof. Dr. Tran Van Chu. The President highlighted the importance of the university’s achievements and expressed the determination of the VNUF faculty, staff and students to successfully implement the university’s development strategy and attain deeper international integration.
After his welcome speech, Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Mr. Nguyễn Xuân Cường presented the VNUF President with an emulation flag on behalf of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the state.
In the framework of the ceremony several VNUF employees were handed medals for excellence in labour. The Central Committee for Economy also awarded 10 students with scholarships and made a donation to the university scholarship foundation.
NArFU delegation also bore gifts – a traditional flower arrangement and northern forest gifts from the North - to mark the occasion and as a symbol of spiritual kinship between the two universities united by strong academic traditions in forestry and sustainable forest management.
A meeting of the administrations of VNUF and NArFU was held as part of the celebrations. The discussion resulted in the signing of a bilateral action plan for 2020-2022 .
Northern Arctic Federal University extends its deep gratitude to Vietnam National University of Forestry, in the person of its President Prof. Dr. Tran Van Chu and Head of International Cooperation Department Prof. Dr. Hoang Van Sam - for coordination of the visit and a significant contribution to the development of cooperation with colleagues from the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
