The 1st International Conference for Young Researchers «Arctic and the North in the Context of International Processes» was organized by NArFU Department of Regional Studies, International Relations and Political Science with support from the Russian Society of Political Scientists and gathered undergraduate and postgraduate students and young researchers from NArFU, Moscow State University and Saint Petersburg State University.
In his welcoming speech, Alexander Tamitsky, Director of NArFU Higher School of Social Sciences, Humanities and International Communication, reminded the audience that the recent years had seen the adoption of several documents defining the priorities of international and Russian policies in the Arctic. According to those strategies, economy, ecology and continuation of international dialogue in the Arctic were identified as foreground for the northern countries.
“We believe that young researchers will be able to discover a clue to cooperation because the Arctic region itself, with its peculiar nature, presupposes dialogue, not confrontation. This Conference should be a platform to exchange opinions and compare notes. We hope that the ideas we have expressed in the framework of the Conference will be heard at the upcoming Arctic Forum in April 2019”, commented Ivan Rogachyov, the Conference’s scientific consultant.
The Conference included three sections: “International and National Security in the Arctic”, “Economic Development Potential in the Arctic”, “Social and Cultural Development Aspects in the Arctic and the North”.
