It is a great pleasure to announce the International Conference on Arctic Biomonitoring held on 26-27 November, 2018 in Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Arkhangelsk, Russia. The event is supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.
The Arctic is one of the most vulnerable ecological systems in the world. On the one hand, permafrost and low annual temperatures protect this area and living organisms from pollution and diseases that affect the southern regions. On the other hand, the climate change process on the planet, the rise in temperature of the world ocean caused the active melting of glaciers, exposed this area to previously unknown chemical toxicants, infectious agents, parasites, etc. Not only air, land and water bodies are subject to such pollution. Animals, birds, fish and even humans are also adversely affected. People living in the Northern regions are at greatest risk, as their lifestyle, food culture and way of life are built on close cooperation with the wild nature of the Arctic. In this regard, the problem of timely response to emerging threats to the life and health of the population living in the Arctic is of particular importance. Here, a very important role is played by biological monitoring. On the basis of monitoring data, appropriate management decisions and regulatory acts should be taken to ensure the human rights to favorable environment, to health protection, and the right to environmental information.
