FACULTY OF NATURAL RESOURCES
The faculty was founded at the same time as the university itself, being its first educational unit. About 10,000 specialists have been trained for 80 years mostly for logging industry. Many of the graduates have taken managerial posts in local administration, forestry societies and enterprises, project and educational institutions. Training of specialists is carried out by well-qualified teaching staff and with all necessary modern equipment.
Undergraduate programme in speciality “Forest engineering”, 250401.60
The graduates gain a wide range of skills. In the course of study students acquire profound knowledge in modern processes and technologies of logging, removing, stacking, processing and transporting raw wood and timber.
On completion the programme the graduates are ready to organize and manage all the processes of logging industry.
Knowledge and skills gained allow the graduates to design and construct logging enterprises (timber industry enterprises) and timber transport enterprises and transport networks: auto- and railroads and water transport facilities.
In addition the graduates acquire necessary skills and knowledge relevant to the specialization chosen.
Specialization “Timber transportation and logistics”
The programme provides its students with a broad background in the area of transport systems used in a wide range of industry branches and having the aim of cargo and passenger transportation.
Satellite systems of positioning transport units are widely used in transport systems. The introduced transport logistical systems are based on economical-mathematical methods. They allow to relocate and operate transport units efficiently and economically as well as to increase the quality of transport sector. This can be defined as having the right item in the right quantity (including timber) at the right time at the right place for the right price in the right condition to the right customer.
Specialization “Forest management”
The progamme focuses on training in the area of timber commerce. Therefore the following subjects are introduced in the curriculum: Forest management, Financial management, Basics of commerce, Business and advertising psychology, Information systems in business, Standardization and certification of forest products.
Studying Forest management the students acquire background in the field of timber industry of the Russian Federation and the Arkhangelsk region, forest lands, forest legislation and regulatory documents on forestry affairs. All aspects of forest management including marketing which is very important for a company to resist competition, also issues related to making transactions, concluding contracts and international agreements are dealt with in the course of training.
Specialization “International timber transportation”
The programme provides the students with additional background in managing transportation of timber cargoes to foreign countries by water and land transport. There is a high demand for the specialists in this sphere as the problem of timber cargoes transportation is very urgent at present. Therefore the students acquire knowledge not only in the field of timber industry technologies but also skills and competencies in customs procedures, information technologies, new management practices. In addition special attention is given to studying foreign languages which will allow the graduates to apply linguistic skills in their work.
Specialization “Management and business in timber enterprises”
Several subjects are introduced to focus on managing logging operations, transporting timber cargoes and commercial timber practices.
On completion the programme in speciality Forest engineering its graduates can be employed in:
timber holding companies and enterprises; wood-working enterprises and sawmills; road building, road building-and-repairing and road operating companies; small logging and wood-working businesses; companies dealing with commercial operations with logs and timber. Career prospects are also available in shipping and waterway companies, project organizations dealing with designing and building logging enterprises, roads and routes of water transport, research organizations, vocational and higher schools (teaching activity).
Undergraduate programme in speciality “Land cadastre”, 120302.65
The knowledge gained allows the graduates to be employed in the area of land resources, used in different branches and sectors of national economy, category land distribution, distribution in accordance with land ownership and land-use management, land-use legislation, land quality and quantity specification , management and control of land condition and use. They can also deal with real estate, its registration, appraisal and control; geo-information and cadastral information systems, project and technical information.
In the course of their training students gain skills and competencies related to obtaining topographical data based on topographical and GPS surveying using all modern equipment and devices. The programme will provide its students with a broad background in land surveying and land management, cadastre registering and keeping state cadastre of real estate, managing land resources, controlling and using land resources and other real property, cadastral evaluation of land and real estate to determine the size of tax to be imposed.
“Geo-information systems and technologies in land cadastre” and “Land and real estate evaluation” encourage thorough studying of issues, focused in the specialization titles by introducing additional subjects into curriculums.
On completion the programme in speciality “Land cadastre” the graduates may be employed in: the company of “Rosregistratsya” and its branches, in municipalities notably in the department of cadastre registering of real estate, and that of land cadastre chamber and mapping, in different enterprises, joint stock companies (JSC) and limited liability companies (LLC), at private land surveyors dealing with land surveying, cadastre registering, topographical surveying, evaluation work ( “Arkhzempredpriyatie JSC”, “Zemkadastr JSC”, “Zemkadastr LLC”, “Shelf JSC”, etc). In addition career prospects are available in planning and surveying organizations, in the departments of large enterprises and holding companies, vocational and higher schools (teaching activity).

On completion these programmes the graduates can work with forest stands, trees, wood and products of mechanical and mechanical - and - chemical wood processing (timber, composite timber-based material, wooden and timber-based articles, etc); technological processes, machines and equipment of logging, removing and transporting logs by water, motor- and railroads; reforestation; technological equipment for mechanical and mechanical - and - chemical wood processing; norms and specifications and standardization systems; methods and means of testing and quality control of timber-based material and articles; operation and maintenance of machines and technological equipment in timber industry.

The Master’s degree holder is ready for work requiring broad fundamental and professional background as well as for research work. Provided the graduate has studied for relevant pedagogic programme he/she can do the teaching.
