The Department of the Russian Language and Elocution was founded in 1938 which makes it one the oldest departments at the University.

Since 2002 we have offered a Ph.D. program in the Russian Language and since 2010 we also offer a Master of the Russian Language program.

The Department’s research focus is in the new field of cognitive studies. Our major research project Russian Cognitive Space in European North led by Professor T.A. Sidorova looks at spheres of concepts of peoples living in European North in comparative perspective. Ethno culture and ethnography are primary research focuses. A laboratory of socio- and psycholinguistics was created at the Department in 1996 and has been active ever since.
