The Department of Linguodidactics for Professional Purposes is unique and notable for several reasons. Firstly, the department has seen rapid development over the past 30 years with the number of staff growing five times. Secondly, its work is not restricted to the Institute of Philology only: the department operates at the University level providing language training for all students of all institutes and departments within NARFU. Thirdly, the range of department’s educational services expands by the year. As of today, we teach nine foreign languages, in the form of core courses and electives, refresher courses and additional courses, beginner courses and advanced courses. Department’s research and educational focus lies in the field of liguodidactics. Three staples of department’s work, among them are foreign languages for professional purposes emphasizing foreign culture in foreign language learning, and international standards in education, have all been worked out in direct cooperation with international institutions as well as face-to-face intercourse with native-speakers.

Maria Druzhinina, present head of the department, has been working at the university since 1984. Her basic academic interests are connected with linguodidactics, methods of language teaching, theory and methods of professional education. Maria Druzhinina is in charge of collective themes of scientific research, various educational programs and models of teaching. Under her guidance scientific and international work became active, a number of seminars and international conferences were held alongside regional methodological seminars.

The formation of the department was promoted by switching to brand new programs to maintain language education for more than 12 thousand students of full-time and part-time departments and postgraduates of all specialties.

In 2010 a Ph. D. course named Theory and Methods of Professional Education (13.00.08) was also introduced.

We see our mission in maintenance of high rate language education for the needs of the Arctic region.
